DAY 1 Training Part 2

4/29/2015

Hey all! Here is a continuation of Day 1 of Training...

By the end of our first day of training, my brain was fried and I was ready for a relaxing evening by the TV. I ordered some Gluten-Free Dominoes pizza (which I recommend to you gluten intolerant people out there) and hung out the rest of the night at the hotel.  As nerdy as it may sound, I was actually pretty excited to learn more about this thermography stuff. What was the second day going to bring? I was ready to continue my journey of becoming a thermal warrior. Will you continue with me? Here is some information that really stuck with me from day 1 of infrared training. Check it out and see if there is something you can learn or maybe you have thoughts on these subjects you would like to share!

What is infrared thermography?

Actual Definition- Infrared thermography is the process of acquisition and analysis of thermal information from non-contact thermal imaging devices.

Christina’s definition- Capturing and analyzing images of infrared radiation with a thermal imaging camera.

How would you explain it?...Tell me your thoughts!

What the heck is infrared radiation? Did you know that practically everything has thermal radiation called infrared? We are not talking about the radiation that is bad for you to be exposed too. This is something completely different. We will get into this more in a future post, but I wanted you to be aware of the fact that this radiation is different than what you normally hear about, and is completely safe. In fact, you are emitting infrared radiation right now! Crazy right?

One of the most important tools you and I will have as infrared thermographers is our BKE. What is BKE? Our instructor emphasized the fact that your Background, Knowledge, and Experience in combination with your infrared training will help you be an effective thermographer. When you are out scanning with your camera, don’t forget that your expertise can help you analyze situations best. The camera is only as good as the operator and that means you need to use all of your BKE to make the best decisions in the field.

What are the benefits of thermography?

There are so many benefits to thermography it’s hard to list them all. Here are just a few:

-Reduce unscheduled power outages
Detect problems quickly, without interrupting service (No one wants to shut down operations for a maintenance issue!)
Assess priorities for corrective action
Minimize preventive maintenance and troubleshooting time.
Comply with insurance company requirements (Many Insurance companies require annual electrical infrared scans in order to have coverage.)
Check for defective equipment while still under manufacturer warranty.

Hope you learned something from me today. This stuff is challenging, but even after just one day of training I already feel like I am on my way to becoming a great Thermographer. Hang around for the next blog post next week...there is so much more to learn!
